Early this morning in Zemun, a municipality of Belgrade, members of the Traffic Police Directorate stopped a driver who exhibited a complete lack of responsibility towards his own, and the lives of others.

In the midst of a campaign of increased traffic control, the police interceptor detected an Audi A8 moving at 237.8 kilometers per hour on the part of the road where the speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour.

What makes this offense even more dangerous are the circumstances in which it occurred. According to the Interior Ministry (MUP), when the 23-year-old driver K.J. was stopped the temperature was low, making the road slippery.

At a speed of almost 240 km/h, the stopping distance of a vehicle on a wet road is hundreds of meters, which means that timely reaction would be effectively impossible.

Driver tried to hide his identity?

The police discovered at the scene that K.J. did not have a driver's license, while the number plates on the luxury Audi were so dirty that they were completely unreadable, which is often interpreted as a deliberate attempt to avoid radars and cameras.

The driver was immediately excluded from traffic. A misdemeanor charge was filed against him for aggressive driving, as well as for illegible number plates and lack of ID. These offenses are punishable with a prison sentence of 30 to 60 days, 15 penalty points and a 9-month driving ban.

Increased control until January 8

The MUP is appealing on all drivers to adjust their speed to the conditions on the road, especially during the upcoming holidays - New Year's, and Orthodox Christmas on January 7.

The traffic police will carry out increased control until January 8, with a special emphasis on detecting speeding and driving under the influence, in order to ensure safety during the holidays.
