The marathon flame has arrived in Belgrade!

The marathon flame, which symbolizes peace, fair play and tolerance arrived today in Belgrade, from Athens, where it will burn at the start and finish of the 28th Belgrade Marathon, which will take place on Saturday, April 18th.

The torch was passed at a formal ceremony in front of the City Assembly by a girl named Nina Marinkovic and handed to the Ambassador of Greece in Serbia, Ikonomidis Constantine, who then gave the flame to the President of the Assembly of Belgrade, mayor Nikola Nikodijevic.

- The marathon flame is a symbol of hard work, perseverance and commitment. We are grateful to Belgrade and the small runners who brought the flame. Together with it, we brought nice weather from Greece, and we wish the marathon participants happiness and success - said the Ambassador of Greece at the press conference.

The mayor of Belgrade, Nikola Nikodijevic thanked the Ambassador of Greece for the honor of allowing Belgrade to host the marathon flame.

- We are grateful to our friends from Greece for the honor that has been awarded to us. The Belgrade Marathon is an event that has transcended sport frames, and is certainly our best ambassador. We are proud of it and that's why we hold onto it so dearly - said Nikodijevic.

He called on all citizens of Belgrade to come out to the marathon on Saturday.

- Year after year,  Belgrade has a record-breaking number of participants. I call on all Belgrade residents to come out to the marathon and run or walk, because this is the only event in which all participants are winners - said Nikodijevic.

Dejan Nikolic, the director of the Belgrade Marathon also thanked the guests from Greece for allowing Belgrade to  host the marathon flame for the second time, which was, by the way, first established in 2007.

- The marathon is a race of life, and a symbol of hope. We all know the historic story of the first marathon, that was, as a struggle for life, run in 490 BC when Philippides died after he conveyed the news of the defeat of the Greek army against the much larger Persians - Nikolic said.
