Border fence cannot solve migrant issue
It is still unknown whether the announced wooden fence will be built, since the decision on the choice of type of fence, which will be 175 kilometers long, could be made today.
This year, 80,000 migrants and refugees entered Hungary, mostly from war-torn countries such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. A number of them are trying to reach the richer countries of the European Union through Hungary.
For the construction of the fence along the border with Serbia, Hungary will spend about 20 million euros, said Marton Gyöngyös, MP and vice president of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Hungarian Parliament.
- This covers only the tangible costs of building the fence. The government has announced that it will participate in the construction in addition to prisoners and the unemployed, but the final costs will be much higher - considered Gyöngyös.
Member of the far-right party "Jobik" says his party is committed to the introduction of border guards, rather than police, who will oversee the border.
- This money should be used to re-establish border guards - Gyöngyös explains his party's position.
- We suggest that everyone who enters the territory of Hungary - legally or not - be placed in a closed refugee center. At this point they have not been closed and refugees move freely around the country - he said.
