Serbia has so far been a transit country for 100,000 migrants, according to Vulin.

“At the moment, we have over 1,000 migrants in Presevo (the south of central Serbia) who are waiting to go through necessary procedures. Everyone received a medical checkup, medicines, food packages, the information on our centers they should go to, how to get there and how to behave,” Vulin told reporters in Vrsac, northeastern Serbia.

The people wanting to seek asylum will not stay in our country for long, but that while they are here, they are protected by national and international laws, the minister noted.

Jankovic: Center for migrants in Belgrade asap

Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic has said that a reception center for migrants should be set up as urgent as possible so that in the next phase they could stay in uninhabited areas of Serbia after a detailed security check.

Jankovic said for RTV B92 that although the main goal of migrants is to reach western European countries, we should think and offer them to stay in our country.

“We should think and offer them an option to stay in the areas that are uninhabited. Then a selection and a detailed security check should take place, although in this phase no one wants to stay in Serbia, but maybe this will change in some new phase,” the commissioner said.

She underlined that for now the most urgent thing is to build a reception center in Belgrade and despite the fact that European officials say that a unique system is needed for the EU, we should not wait for the EU.
