The Mayor of the South Mitrovica Municipality, Agim Bahtiri, asked the provisional Kosovo institutions to send to the parliament the proposal to amend the law in a way that would enable "unification" of the south with the northern part of Mitrovica, which is predominantly inhabited by Serbs.
Bahtiri on his Facebook profile reminded that his initiative was supported by all political parties in the local parliament of southern Mitrovica.
- I asked for the unification of the city of Mitrovica into one municipality, as it always was. The government must now take concrete measures to change the law that would make Mitrovica a single municipality - wrote Bahtiri.
He says that certain political circles oppose this initiative, and they are the ones who, as they say, do not oppose actions for the division of Kosovo.
- We have the right to work on the unification of the city (Mitrovica), it has always been a whole city, and none of the Serbian colleagues have the right to demand the division of Kosovo. I know exactly what I want and I am deeply convinced that the unification will come in the near future - Bahtiri said.
He urged the provincial Pristina institutions to "act quickly and submit to the assembly a proposal to amend the law to make Mitrovica a single municipality again".
On November 30, the Municipal Assembly of South Mitrovica unanimously supported the Bahtiri initiative, asking the provincial Pristina authorities to amend the Law on Administrative Boundaries of the two municipalities - South and North Mitrovica.
