Djordje (15) and Mira (11) are heroes of Golija: They reach people cut off by snow on horseback

Last week, numerous villages were cut off from the world due to large snowdrifts on Mt. Golija. In order to help neighbors from nearby villages, 11-year-old Mira and 15-year-old Djordje Resimic rode through snowdrifts on their horses, like proper heroes of this Ivanjica mountain area.

"On Saturday, me and dad took off. Big snow was accumulating overnight and we took the medicine to our grandmother who is here in the village. She was sick and we couldn't reach her by car. I took my horse and went out along my dad," says Djordje, RTS reports.

The siblings also take medicines, food and essentials to their snowed in neighbors in nearby Bratiljevo and Kovilj.

"When there's big snow, when someone needs something taken too them, I take my horse and go. It's not hard. I love him the most, his name is Vranac, I have been riding him since I was seven. It's better for me to go on horseback than on foot and I love it a lot," says the girl, Mira.

Although the storm is over, Mira and Djordje did not stop visiting nearby mountain hamlets with their uncles.

"If there's big snow I don't put the saddle on, just the reins. They are calm horses, they won't kick, bite, or throw you off," said Djordje.

It would be easier if roads were paved

Ercege and the surrounding villages have mostly elderly households. In the winter, many can only be reached by tractor, on horseback or by sledge.

"Our roads are poor, a horse is the best way," points out Milutin Resimic.

Rade Resimic says that it would be good to have paved roads leading to Ercege, but also to repair the roads going through the villages.

"There would be more people and more people would be growing raspberries and occupying themselves with agriculture," said Rade.

Mira and Djordje spend every free moment in the village. They help out, tend the sheep and are happy to be with their horses. That is why they don't find it hard to go out and overcome snow obstacles while helping their neighbors.
