Epidemiologist Predrag Kon, a member of the Crisis HQ set up to fight coronavirus, said on Happy TV last night that at least 800 people would have died from this disease in Serbia if a state of emergency had not been introduced.

In Serbia, coronavirus has so far claimed 125 lives.

"The model showed 800 dead for us, the upper limit was more than 2,000, so we had to introduce a state of emergency. I personally knew how the pandemic plans were being developed, and we all knew that, both Pelemis and Stevanovic, and all of us as a system, were not unprepared. We were unprepared regarding protective equipment and medicines," said Dr. Kon.

Pulmonologist from the University Children's Clinic in Belgrade Dr. Branimir Nestorovic, who appeared on the same show, went on to say that the system was not yet ready, to which host Milomir Maric remarked that the largest countries in the world were scrambling for equipment.

"When the equipment arrived we knew that salvation had arrived and we could continue the fight. It just took a few days to get it distributed the right way," said Dr. Kon.

Dr. Nestorovic added that no healthcare system could buy ventilators and keep them in the garage just for the sake they are needed one day.
