Serbia is in 54th place on list of coronavirus-safe countries: What does Doctor Kon say about that

Serbia is ranked 54th on the list of safe countries in terms of coronavirus, which is topped by Switzerland. Dr. Predrag Kon, an epidemiologist and a member of the Crisis HQ set up to fight coronavirus, says that Serbia has so far succeeded in what has been set as the goal, but that this doesn't mean that it will remain that way forever. He says that he has no doubt about Switzerland's first place on the list - but that we should look at all 130 criteria, and see where our country is weaker.

"Switzerland currently has 1,660 registered deaths per 8.5 million inhabitants. It is first on the list of safe countries in terms of Covid-19 infection. I believe that based on the mentioned 130 criteria, they are the safest country in the world in terms of protection against this infection, and I do not question that at all. Serbia is in the 54th place on this list," Dr. Kon wrote on Facebook.

He stressed that the goal in Serbia was to have as few deaths as possible.

"Currently, there are 249 deaths in Serbia per 7.5 million inhabitants. So far, we have succeeded in what we set as the goal, which does not mean that it will remain that way forever. That is why we need to look at all 130 criteria and see where we truly are weaker. On principle I am agaist competition in this fight against the virus and I wish all countries to succeed. However, the issue of safety is important and such lists are useful if you understand them that way. We are facing further monitoring of both our epidemic and the world pandemic, and a timely, rational and efficient response," wrote Dr. Kon.

He also said that he is "certainly not pleased because of excess situations and new hotpots."

"Nevertheless, we essentially expect the summer to protect us, while collective immunity should be expected less and less. But we certainly have to wait for the results of the ongoing immunity testing of the population. The behavior of the virus in the southern hemisphere indicates that we will live with coronavirus SARS 2 and Covid 19 disease going forward. It should be understood that respecting the measures we have been talking about from the beginning is still extremely important, but almost equally, and especially during the summer, it's important to return to regular life as soon as possible, because without that the health care system cannot survive for financial reasons. This is certainly a topic that concerns the protection of public health and should be viewed separately from politics (even at a time when it seems impossible)," he wrote.

Dr. Kon reiterated that the return of the virus will most likely happen, especially come the fall, while excess stuations and new hotspots may be happening even during the summer.

"The developments in the southern hemisphere show this," said Dr. Kon, and sent his most important message:

"Older and chronic patients should continue to protect themselves, just as the young people who come in contact with them. This should be repeated constantly."
