Crisis HQ on the new strain: "It's not important to us. Science proved nothing but faster spread"

"The situation with coronavirus is somewhat calmer," Dr. Stevanovic pointed out

Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar met today with directors of Covid hospitals in the country. After the meeting, Dr. Goran Stevanovic, director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Clinical Center of Serbia, addressed the public.

"As you can already see, the situation is somewhat calmer. This allows us to think about reducing capacities in Covid hospitals. In the shortest period of time, we will strive to have KBC Zvezdara leave the Covid system, that will take quite some time," Dr. Stevanovic pointed out.

Speaking about vaccines, he said that training of teams from clinical-hospital centers will start today, while vaccine teams will be formed practically in all hospitals.

"It's very important to say that the Ministry of Health sent a request to all healthcare institutions to report their needs, i.e. a list of equipment that got worn out in the previous year, a large procurement of equipment is planned, which refers to standard devices: X-rays, scanners, but also sick beds," said Dr. Stevanovic.

The new strain is interesting for science

Dr. Mijomir Pelemis, an infectologist and a member of the Crisis HQ, said that panic should not be created among citizens in Serbia because of the new strain of coronavirus.

"Whether it's the British, the South African coronavirus strain... it's not important to us. Science has proved nothing but the faster spread of that strain. Preventive measures are still the same, nothing is changing. The only way to stop a pandemic is to get vaccinated. There is a solution," he pointed out.

As he said, different strains are interesting for science, so that should be left to scientists.

"Vaccines and preventive measures should be dealt with today, please. Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine and prevention," was Dr. Pelemis' message.
