Croatian men are the most obese in the EU: One age group is particularly at risk

By 2050, obesity will be the cause of 75 percent of diabetes cases, 10 percent of cardiovascular diseases, seven percent of dementia cases and five percent of cancer cases.

According to the data from the latest large study on the health of EU citizens, Croatia is the worst ranked country when it comes to overweight citizens, writes Zagreb's Jutarnji List.

The convincing "champions" among those who are overweight are men in Croatia, because as many as 73 percent of them fall into that category. France has the lowest number of overweight men - 53 percent.

Italy has the lowest percentage of overweight women in the EU - 37 percent, while in Croatia that number is 58%.

According to assessment from the OECD publication, "The Heavy Burden of Obesity," in Croatia it is associated with life expectancy decreasing by three and a half years. By 2050, obesity will be the cause of 75 percent of diabetes cases, 10 percent of cardiovascular diseases, seven percent of dementia cases and five percent of cancer cases.

The Croatian obesity statistics show that 27.3 percent of people aged 18 to 24, 45.1 percent aged 25 to 34, 59.8 percent aged 35 to 44 and as many as 66.6 percent of people aged 45 to 54 have particularly excessive body mass.

The frequency of obesity in children has also been observed, amounting to as much as 35 percent in the age group of eight-year-olds, according to the CroCOSI study (European initiative for monitoring obesity in children), which ranks Croatia among the most affected European countries, writes Jutarnji List.
