Marko Djuric's message from Washington: Expect US congressmen's letter of support soon

By the end of the month, I expect a letter supporting improvement of relations with Serbia by a significantly larger number of the members of Congress compared to the number of those who signed the previous two letters, criticizing Serbia's positions and affirming the positions of some other sides, said the Serbian ambassador to the US

Relations between Serbia and the United States are constantly on the rise, said Serbian Ambassador to Washington Marko Djuric, adding that a letter supporting improvement of relations between the two countries can be expected soon, which he says will be signed by a significant number of the members of US Congress.

Djuric said that Serbia today has twice as many friends in US Congress than a year ago, when, according to him, intensive work to win over new members of Congress and Senate for the Serbian Caucus began.

"By the end of the month, I expect a letter supporting improvement of relations with Serbia by a significantly larger number of the members of Congress compared to the number of those who signed the previous two letters, criticizing Serbia's positions and affirming the positions of some other sides," said Djuric.

He recalled that US Special Envoy for the Balkans Gabriel Escobar presented a plan for improving relations with Serbia, which refers to strengthening economic cooperation as a basis for building future political ties and relations, as well as strengthening trust in various areas, from the economy to culture and defense cooperation.

Djuric says that Washington also wants to encourage Brussels to work more actively on EU enlargement, as well as to provide strong support to the regional initiative Open Balkans.

"I have received assurances from representatives of the US administration that Washington will contribute toward some other countries in the region and certain territories, such as our southern province, having a different approach to Open Balkans," said Djuric.

He pointed out that it is very important for Serbia to have active dialogue with the United States on the topic of Kosovo and Metohija, one of the few on which the two countries do not agree.

"That country has more than 600 soldiers in the KFOR mission, and without the United States, it is difficult to imagine stability in Kosovo and Metohija, which is of vital importance to our people," Djuric underlined.

He added that today, Serbia is incomparably more active in Washington than other countries in our region, but that they have had several decades of advantage in building relations with the United States.

"We had a terrible period in the 1990s, then we had a period from 2000 until 2012, when our country was experiencing economic collapse," stated Djuric.

According to him, today it is a pleasure to represent a country which is the best in terms of economic growth in Europe and which has a new policy paradigm, invests intensively in infrastructure and is building 10 highways and expressways.

"One of those roads is being built by a US company that is closely connected with US politics, let me remind you that Bechtel, that is building the Morava Corridor, was headed by a (former) secretary of state. All this influences the perception of Serbia in US political circles," the ambassador stated.

He stressed that the US is the leading market for the Serbian defense industry, as well as for the IT industry, which, he says, is achieveing excellent results.

"Last week, a Serbian software company bought a reputable US company in Silicon Valley. In Serbia, we have US companies such as NCR and others that employ more than 20,000 IT experts," said Djuric.
