The hero from the Danube, Renato Grbic, who has saved many lives, is celebrating his 60th birthday today. On his birthday, Renato's message to everyone is that there is only one life, that it is precious and that every problem can be solved.

As he reveals to us, he has saved 30 lives during his 60 years, and thinks that is enough as he hopes he will not have to jump into the Danube again in order to rescue people trying to commit suicide.

"It hasn't happened in a long time and I'm happy because of that, and I hope there won't be any more. People need to understand that every life is precious and every problem can be solved," Renato, who owns a restaurant on the bank of the Danube River, near a bridge, told Telegraf.rs.

He is still in touch with two of the people he rescued. They celebrate their "second birthdays." He is glad that the women who tried to end their lives by jumping into the water continued to live.

The event that made the deepest impression on him is the rescue of Ljiljana Mitic, who killed her ex-husband and his daughter in front of the Madera restaurant in Belgrade in 2010, and then tried to kill herself by jumping from Branko's Bridge. She floated downstream all the way to the Pancevo Bridge.

Those scenes, he says, are still in his mind.

"She killed them because of the death of the son they had together, who died from the use of narcotics. She blamed her husband for his death, so she wanted to hurt him. You don't know what it's like to pull out a double killer. Everything is different. You are rescuing someone who killed two innocent people. That has stayed with me the most. Images of Ljiljana being taken out of the water, a boat ride to the Konoba (his restaurant), a lot of police and everything that happened in the Konoba after that... That leaves a mark," says Renato and adds that he remained permanently in touch with two of the people he rescued:

"We celebrate their second birthdays."

To all who may be thinking of taking their own life in any way, his message is that they only have one life to live.

"Life has no replay and every problem can be solved. The family is very important in all this, to recognize it. One good conversation or a conversion with an expert I think solves more than 50 percent of such situations. When people are rejected by their family, by society, when they have no one standing by them, then we hear things like, 'Well, what else can I do but kill myself'," Renato recounts for Telegraf.rs.

He gives immeasurable love to his grandchildren, and they, as he stresses, give him strength.

"Those are my angels, my life and my strength. I would be happiest if there were no more suicide attempts. For us to celebrate births and baptisms, for this coronavirus madness to be over, so that we can continue life in a more beautiful and much better way than we have had so far," the hero from the Danube told our portal.

The editorial staff of the Telegraf.rs portal wishes Renato a happy birthday, and many happy returns, and all the best in life!
