The doctors from the Clinical and Hospital Center (KBC) Bezanijska Kosa fought hard to save the life of the young British woman Morgan Ribeiro (20), who died in Belgrade after undergoing a stomach reduction surgery in Istanbul. Both our and Turkish prosecutors are working on this case, and a source from the investigation revealed for Telegraf.rs all the details of the attempt to save the girl who arrived in Serbia in a state of severe sepsis.

According to our source, when our surgeons opened her up, they saw was is known as "an abdominal disaster." The source also says that she had lesions on her small intestine, which refutes the Turkish doctor's statement that the intestine was not damaged.

"Morgan landed urgently in Belgrade and was taken to KBC Bezanijska Kosa. She was admitted in a state of severe sepsis. Obese people are immuno-compromised patients, they have a significantly weaker immune system compared to a person of normal weight. The girl had one postoperative complication, which occurred during the placement of the instruments used to enter the abdomen during those laparoscopic surgeries, and it was a lesion on the small intestine. That small intestine lesion was closer to the duodenum, so it was more complicated to treat. It is risky because you have to connect the small intestine, cut off the diseased (tissue) and connect the healthy. That connection when there have been changes caused by inflammation is compromised in terms of healing even in a healthy person, not to mention in an immuno-compromised and septic patient," the source explained for Telegraf.

After landing at the Belgrade airport, based on her clinical picture, it was first thought that she suffered from pulmonary embolism, considering that she did not have good levels of oxygen saturation in her blood. That is why the doctors at the airport suspected pulmonary embolism, which could be one possible complication.

"When she was transferred to KBC Bezanijska Kosa, the doctors in that institution ruled out pulmonary embolism. They did a pneumo angiography and saw that the problem was actually in the abdomen. The abdomen was gangrenous. The abdominal wall was red where the trocars had been placed. In those places where there were scars, the wounds caused by those trocars oozed puss, mixed with intestinal content.

"When the surgeon opened her up, he encountered a classic case of abdominal disaster. In that situation, nothing else could be done, except to resect, connect the intestine and ensure abundant drainage of the inflamed part. She was certainly in a bad condition, it was difficult to establish her hemodynamics, she exhibited all the signs of septic shock, she had already had two septic myocardial infarctions. One upon admission, the other after the second, third day of this second operation aimed at saving her life. She was operated on once in Istanbul and once in Belgrade," explains our source.

According to him, the sutures from stomach reduction suregry held flawlessly, but, the lesions on the small intestine caused the biggest problem.

"Our doctors made every effort. They applied intensive modern therapy, which is used in the treatment of those septic patients, but nothing could be done."

The Interior Ministry, MUP, was immediately informed about everything, and the public prosecutor requested an autopsy.

Asked how he comments on the Turkish doctor's statement that the small intestine was not damaged, our source said that investigators have the pH report, that from the autopsy, records of discoveries made during surgery, and imaging records.

The victim's boyfriend was with her the whole time.

"According to what we know, they usually discharge patients from that hospital (in Instanbul) the day after the operation. She was kept for another two days, but the only diagnostic test was a lung scan. The doctors in Belgrade also suspected pulmonary embolism because of the high d-Dimer. D-Dimer is an indicator that confirms that blood clotting has occurred in some of the blood vessels. But sometimes it can be elevated in severe septic conditions, inflammation or infection. But it was not a case of pulmonary embolism," the source from the investigation explained for Telegraf.rs.

According to him, when Morgan's chest was imaged, a part of her abdomen was also imaged. The doctors saw that it was full of fluid, which is not usual for this type of surgery. Her abdominal wall was red, swollen, painful...

"After that, a CT scan of her abdomen was performed, and the operation started, almost an act of desperation. Unfortunately, she passed away," said our source.
