The Hungarian ambassador to Serbia, Jozsef Magyar, said today that Hungary is not in favor of sanctions against the Russian Federation but instead wants an agreement to be reached, adding that Russian energy products are the most affordable, not only as far as Hungary is concerned, but also for other countries.

"In the West, they will not say that Russian energy products are still the most affordable. As far as shipping and transit is concerned, they are also the most affordable," the ambassador said during a panel at the Euronews Adria Summit conference held at the Palace of Serbia.

Speaking about US sanctions targeting Russian oil, Magyar stated that it is important for Hungary to have an open dialogue with the US, that is, for the US to be aware of Hungary's physical and geopolitical capabilities.

"The purpose of it all is for our economy to have a broad partnership, and secondly, let's not forget that in European countries governments are elected by their own citizens. The Hungarians elected a government led by Viktor Orban. We must be open about diversification, we must have partnerships, whether it's steel or electricity," said Magyar.

The ambassador pointed out that there is continuity in relations between Budapest and Washington and recalled the "direct and personal" ties between the two presidents.

"We are moving toward new technologies and we want the Washington-Budapest relationship to move forward in a calm way, and impact the entire region," the diplomat said.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday that Hungary will be exempt from US sanctions on Russian oil as long as Donald Trump is the president of the United States, and he is the prime minister of Hungary.

Orban said earlier that the deal is key to Hungary's program to lower utility prices.

Orban also stated that Brussels (EU) continues with the policy to ban imports of Russian energy products from 2027, although Hungary has secured an exemption from US sanctions.

"They want to continue with war and sanctions," Orban said (of the EU) in a post on Facebook, MTI reported on Tuesday.
