First photos of new bridge over Sava River in Belgrade; It's worth €94 million, to be completed by end of 2026
The construction of a new bridge over the Sava River is underway in Belgrade, on the site of the dismantled Old Sava Bridge.
The new structure is designed to have two lanes for vehicles in both directions, small tram gardens, as well as pedestrian and cycling zones, which should improve city traffic and connectivity of the two river banks.
The estimated value of the project to remove the old bridge and build a new one is about 94.1 million euros, according to data from the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.
The bridge will be about 420 meters long and 38 meters wide, with a central tram corridor and pedestrian and bicycle paths. The project is funded from Serbia's state budget (15 percent) and a loan from the Chinese Deposit Insurance Corporation, which covers the remaining 85 percent of the investment.
Construction works are being carried out by the Chinese state-owned company PowerChina, and the project is part of a wider effort to modernize traffic infrastructure in the Serbian capital.
According to official announcements, the bridge is expected to be built by the end of 2026, when it should become a new Belgrade landmark.
