A horrific event sent shock waves this morning among the residents of the New Belgrade blocks.

According to latest information from the scene, an elderly woman was killed in a traffic accident.

Truck driver didn't see the victim?

The tragedy happened in the very heart of a residential block, on a path that leads through a park and is used by many local residents who go out for a walk every day. We have learned that the woman was killed as a truck driver was driving in reverse.

"The truck was huge, and the path is narrow. The woman was walking slowly, she probably didn't hear the engine. The driver ran a rear wheel directly over her head. The scene was so horrific that people turned away and screamed in terror," said a reporter from the scene.

Body covered, police at scene

There are numerous police patrols at the scene of the acciden this morning, as the body of the victim was lying covered with a white sheet, next to the vehicle itself.

Forensic experts were conducting an investigation in order to determine the angle at which the truck was moving and whether the driver had an assistant (passenger) who might have guided him while driving in reverse, in a zone of increased risk (to pedestrians).

Trucks have huge "blind spots", which in this case might have proved fatal for the woman.

The truck driver was tested for alcohol and drugs at the scene, and has been taken into custody in order to give a statement to the competent prosecutor.

Eyewitnesses told Telegraf.rs that delivery vehicles also often drive in that area, which poses a risk for people taking a walk.
