KFOR commander speaks about US troops in Kosovo: This is the final position
KFOR Commander Ozkan Ulutas has stated that no significant changes in the composition and positioning of KFOR are currently being considered (in Kosovo and Metohija).
Ultas told Pristina-based RTV21 - when asked to comment on media reports about a possible reduction in the number of US troops in KFOR - that the US continues to play a fundamental role in supporting sustainable security throughout Kosovo and Metohija and regional stability, including the KFOR mission.
"The United States has almost 600 soldiers deployed in KFOR. They head Regional Command East of our mission. Regional Command East contributes to the daily operations of KFOR in many different ways, including patrols, training and exercises, engagement with local community, and support to reconstruction and economic development projects," Ulutas said.
He added that the composition and positioning of KFOR are periodically reviewed and adjusted to evolving circumstances to ensure that the mission remains effective, but that no significant changes are being considered at this time.
Ulutas also said that KFOR continues to fulfill its mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 1244 to help maintain a safe and secure environment for all people living in Kosovo and Metohija, and their freedom of movement.
The Politico website reported several days ago, citing diplomatic sources in Brussels, that the Trump administration has in recent months been seriously lobbying for a reduction in the number of NATO soldiers deployed in Kosovo.
