Djuric meets with UNMIK head: Serbia expects UN mission to speak about alarming situation Serbs face in Kosovo
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Marko Djuric spoke today with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and the head of UNMIK Peter Due, about the current security and political situation in Kosovo and Metohija and the position of the Serb people there.
Djuric pointed out that the Republic of Serbia attaches great importance to the activities of UNMIK and emphasized that it is of great importance for Serbia to preserve the continuity and dynamics of UN Security Council sessions dedicated to the work of UNMIK in an open format, so that the wider international public can be objectively informed about the security-sensitive situation and the position of Serb and other non-Albanian communities in Kosovo and Metohija.
He added that Serbia expects UNMIK, in addition to effectively implementing its mandate on the ground, to point out the alarming situation faced by Serb and other non-majority communities objectively and based on the facts in the next report of the UN secretary-general, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday.
Djuric is also quoted as saying that the solution reached in connection with the application of Pristina's law on foreigners in the triangle of the European Union, Belgrade and Pristina prevented the worst scenario, stressing that "someone was expecting such an outcome."
According to Djuric, this solution preserved healthcare and education institutions, which represent the backbone of the survival of the Serb people in Kosovo and Metohija and the foundation of the future Community of Serb Municipalities (ZSO). At the same time, he pointed to numerous examples of institutional violence, as well as to the continuous and increasingly frequent unilateral actions taken by the provisional institutions in Pristina directed against Serbs.
Djuric also stated that the presence of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and Metohija is extremely important for preserving peace, stability and security in the Province and that Belgrade will continue to provide UNMIK with every kind of support that can contribute to improving the overall situation in Kosovo and Metohija, the statement said.
