FM Djuric: Opening of embassy in Riga strengthens Serbia's diplomatic presence in Baltics
Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric spoke with Milena Mitic before she assumed the post of extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Serbia in Latvia and pointed out that the opening of the Serbian embassy in Riga represents a significant step towards strengthening our country's diplomatic presence in the Baltics.
"It was a pleasure for me to have the final conversation with Milena Mitic before she assumes the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Serbia to Latvia. The opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Latvia represents a significant step in strengthening the diplomatic presence of our country in the Baltic region and a clear confirmation of Serbia's determination to deepen relations with the countries in this part of Europe," Djuric stated in a post on X.
He added that he believes that Ambassador Mitic, with her many years of experience and dedicated work, will contribute to further improving of Serbian-Latvian cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.
In late November, the Government of Serbia made a decision to open the Embassy in Latvia.
The decision was published in the Official Gazette on November 28, and entered into force eight days later.
As stated at the time in the Official Gazette, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was tasked with taking all necessary measures to implement this decision.
The president of the Assembly of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, announced the opening of the embassy in Riga last May, stating that Belgrade is trying to open a channel of communication with those countries that are "more skeptical" of Serbia's EU membership path.
