BELGRADE WILL GET A GLORIOUS TUNNEL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY: This is where it will be!

One of the most important infrastructural projects in the capital will be the new tunnel which will connect with two lanes Savamala and boulevard of Despot Stefan, for which there will be Tender for contractor next year, said Milutin Folic, main city architect.

The value of this project would vary from 90 to 110 million euros, and it would depend from the technical solutions required to realize the project, said Folic for the Novosti.

- With expert analysis it is determined that the traffic in the downtown will be reduced by 14%. Pollution of the environment will be less for 10%. The distance will be shorted by 8%. Those will be fantastic results - said the architect.

The expert analysis was done by Institute for Urbanization and from 9 possibilities they chose two, that are now open to public, and the Office for construction of Belgrade with the new revised budget allocated the money for this project.

- With both variants, the entrance from Savamala will remain in the same place - at park near the Faculty of Economics, but the exits on Palilula would be different. According to the first plan, the vehicles going from New Belgrade towards Karaburma or Pancevo would exit from the tunnel in Despot Stefan boulevard near the city Police department. In other plan there are two exits, one at the Botanical Garden, and the other at the crossroad of Cvijic and Poankareova street - said Folic.

Since 1972 there has been an idea to lose some burden from the traffic in downtown Belgrade with building a tunnel like this one. However, this idea was discarded because of the great costs, and the technology of the day for making tunnels was far more expensive than it is today.
