Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro candidate Milo Djukanovic achieved a convincing victory in the first round of presidential elections held in Montenegro on Sunday

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the ruling DPS leader, Milo Djukanovic, on the victory in the presidential election, saying that he believes that the development of Russian-Montenegrin relations in the spirit of traditional friendship would be in line with the interests of the peoples of both countries.

- Dear Mr. Djukanovic, I congratulate you on the victory at the presidential elections. We believe that the development of Russian-Montenegrin relations in the spirit of traditional friendship would be in line with the interests of the peoples of both countries - Putin said in a congratulatory message delivered by the DPS to the media.

Djukanovic won almost 54 percent of the votes of the citizens who voted, while his opponent, supported by a part of the opposition, won slightly more than 33 percent of the votes.

Seven candidates took part in the elections for the president of Montenegro who will replace Filip Vujanovic, and for the first time in history, there was a woman candidate.
