Mavrovo in Macedonia is abound in natural beauty, breathtaking, and this national park is visited by domestic and foreign tourists all year round. Ski slope Mavrovo is also very popular, and this park offers much more than that. Its church is specially noted which slowly reveals its long hidden secrets and beauties.

However, due to the construction of the hydro-system "Mavrovo", church was flooded in 1956.

Some tourists were able to reach the shore and see the church, and only a few were able to enter into it, and see up close how it looks like now.

The level of water in Mavrovo reduced, and people got the opportunity to enter the church and to see one of the most beautiful temples, reports telegraf.mk.

- The tourists who want to go in the church come all the time, but that is only able when the water recedes. Only divers entered before - said one of the Mavrovo residents.

The church found its place in the prestigious magazine "The Huffington Post" this Friday, where it was pronounced one of the largest abandoned churches in the world.

In the last few years, there have been initiatives to restore the church.

It was recently presented as a project for maintenance, restoration and protection of the church "St Nikola", which is a part of the studio "Teatriks" from Skopje.

Object should be fixed and protected as a part of the archaeological and cultural heritage. Church should preserve its original shape and the roof construction should be rebuilt.

According to the census of 2002, Mavrovo had 166 inhabitants. 98% of them are ethnic Macedonians and the rest are Serbs. Most of them are Orthodox.
