At the birth, Sandra Zivkovic was diagnosed with a severe lung disease, cystic fibrosis, and she was in a coma because of it. Doctors thought that she won't wake up. However, Sandra received a new organ and she has been living her life to the fullest, successfully conquering mountain peaks.

This brave girl serves as an example that you should never give up.

- I had a transplant on September 23rd, 2013, so I recently celebrated my "fourth birthday", on the mountain climb, which I have been organizing for four years in the honor of my donorAs much as I talk about it, a part of me is not aware that I ever had a transplant and that I have organs of someone else inside of me. I don't know who the donor was, the information is classified in Austria, where the surgery was performed - said Sandra Zivkovic who finally started "breathing" with new lungs four years ago.

Until recently, Sandra couldn't climb a single step without the artificial oxygen, and her parents never lost hope that she will be a healthy girl one day.

People with cystic fibrosis can live normally until the disease develops, and it's no longer a life. That happened to me when I was 21. We take medications, but we manage to do everything everybody else is doing and to complete daily tasks, with some difficulties - Sandra said.

This brave girl asked the doctors to put her on the transplant list.

- I have been active my whole life, I always had to do something, outside of school, outside of college. Whether that was some sport, participating in the eco-action, some association, it doesn't matter, just to keep myself moving. And then the period where my disease became worse, at the end of 2012, when I said to my doctors that I no longer function normally and if there is any chance, to put me on the transplant list - said Sandra.

That moment was a turning point for her. She realized what she was waiting for and she wasn't ready for that scenario.

- You are never ready for that, although you know that it will happen sometime. And, I hoped that it will happen much later in life. I want to run by the bus, but I can't, I want to go to Faculty to go to lectures, but I can't go to them all. I used to carry my inhaler with batteries and when I had to inhale I went to my friend's - Sandra said.

Coughing became harder and harder.

- I had to cough before I start going up the stairs, and that cough lasts for five minutes, you are out of breath, you have a feeling that your lungs will explode, and then you pause between the floors as if you are climbing Mount Everest, going out during the day were reduced to minimum. The most important thing, you meet the love of your life, and you can't enjoy it because you know you could die soon. That is very hard - Sandra remembers for Danas.

She started using oxygen concentrator at home, only during the night, and then during the day, at the end, she ended up in the hospital because she couldn't breathe anymore. She stayed there for two months until she left to Vienna to have a transplant.

- That was the longest time I was in the hospital, that almost brought me to death. The doctors put me in a coma and no person with cystic fibrosis woke up. When they transferred me to the intensive care, no one believed that I will make it because the transplant surgery was unreachable in 2013, and they couldn't do anything to help me survive - Sandra remembers.

Thanks to her parents they reached to the people who donated the lungs from their child, they made their peace with the fact that their child will die. They went to Vienna to give her the part of their lungs.

- However, when it became evident that I will make it to Vienna, thanks to the wonderful people who made all the efforts to get me there, the doctors realized that miracles are possible and they gave their best to keep me alive until I reached there - explains Sandra.

Luckily for Sandra, the lungs appeared the day before the surgery and they were adequate in every parameter, but the lungs were intended for the girl in Austria. Considering that Sandra was in a coma and she could die any moment, the doctors decided to give the lungs to her.

- The organ is no good if the size, the type of tissue, the blood group and numerous other things don't match. It's not flowers to put it from one pot to the other - Sandra said.

This brave girl thinks that greatest heroes are those who sign the donor card.

- They did the greatest thing anyone of us can do during their life, and it costs nothing. They can be proud of themselves. In any case, the body of the deceased person will rot, so it's better to use it, to save someone from suffering and to live a normal life - Sandra said.
