Twenty tons of illegally buried hazardous waste was found on a private land in the Obrenovac area, but the ecological disaster was avoided, the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced.

Safety Information Agency and the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office of Obrenovac informed the ministry about the discovered waste.

- There is a suspicion that it is a hazardous waste that is highly toxic and which can cause serious consequences for the environment, health and safety of people and overall biodiversity - the Ministry said.

The Ministry in cooperation with Security Intelligence Agency, The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office will inform the media about the circumstances of the nearly avoided ecological catastrophe, the statement said. 

The public will be informed about this action and the representatives of the competent state bodies and the Minister of Environmental Protection Goran Trivan will address the journalists.
