Telegraf learns: Another country withdraws its recognition of Kosovo

As Telegraf has learned, the 17th country to withdraw its recognition of independence of Kosovo and Metohija is the Republic of Nauru, a Pacific nation.

The Republic of Nauru is the smallest independent republic in the world, with an area of 21.3 square kilometers - but under the influence of Australia, it was among the first to recognize Kosovo as early as April 2008.

On November 11, Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic announced that Ghana had withdrawn its recognition of Kosovo, showing an official note to prove it.

He then announced that by the end of the year, three or four more countries would do the same, but also explained why it is important that the number of states that have recognized Kosovo must be less than 97.

Minister Dacic has said earlier that it is very difficult to determine how many countries have actually recognized Kosovo.

The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of so-called Kosovo states in English, Serbian and French that 114 countries have recognized Kosovo's independence - while the Albanian language version of the site mentions 116, stating that the goal of having more than 100 countries do that has been achieved.

The "Kosovo thanks you" site also says there are 116 - and that Barbados is the last country to make the recognition, back in February 2018.

Before Ghana, the decision to withdraw their recognition was made by by Togo and the Central African Republic in 2019, and by Suriname, Lesotho, Papua New Guinea, Burundi, the Union of Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, Liberia, Grenada, Palau, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Solomon Islands and Madagascar last year.
