Kurti banned from running for a seat in the Assembly for the second time

The Election Complaints Panel in Pristina has banned all parliamentary candidates who have been convicted in Kosovo and Metohija in the past three years from running in the February 14 elections, including Albin Kurti, the list holder and candidate for prime minister of the Self-Determination, RTS reports.

The panel decided to certify only those candidates who meet the legal requirements, i.e., have not had convictions. Also, convicted candidates cannot be replaced by others.

Thus, according to the decision, Albin Kurti and four others from the Self-Determination have been removed from the list of candidates.

The decision states that Albin Kurti, Albulena Haxhiu, Liburn Aliu, Bajram Mavriqi and Labinote Demi-Murtezi cannot be replaced by other candidates.

A similar decision has being made concerning several candidates of the Social Democratic Initiative led by Fatmir Limaj.

The decision of the panel is the second instance of decision-making that the parties lodged their appeals with, because the Central Election Commission did not allow them to participate in the election with candidates who had convictions.

The next instance is the Supreme Court, before which the parties can file appeals within 24 hours. The Supreme Court has three days to decide. The candidate verification process should be completed by January 31.
