The embassy of Ukraine in Serbia has responded to Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia Aleksandar Vulin regarding his comment that "it is easier to find Ukraine's request to become a NATO member, than to impose sanctions against the NATO aggressor," by saying that Ukraine demanded an end to the bombing of Yugoslavia in all squares.

The embassy first reacted to Vulin's statement regarding the bombing of Serbia (the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, asking the minister whether Ukraine had bombed Serbia, to which he responded, which provoked a new reaction from the Ukrainian Embassy.

"As for the actions of Ukraine in 1999, we have to state that Ukraine demanded an end to the bombing of Yugoslavia in all squares. We would like to cite just one of the many statements of the Ukrainian leadership: The address of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the parliaments of the world, the interparliamentary union, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, regarding an immediate stop of the bombing of Yugoslavia," said the embassy.

The statement also adds the position of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which confirms the "principled position on the war in Yugoslavia as an unprovoked aggression expressed in the statements of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of October 6, 1998, February 19, 1999 (2a / 99-VR), March 24, 1999 and in the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of March 24, 1999 (546-14)."

"Expressing its deep concern over the fact that the NATO aggression against Yugoslavia not only failed to resolve the conflict in Kosovo and Metohija, but deepened and spread it to neighboring countries, turning the conflict into a general Yugoslav and Balkan tragedy and a European problem... Bearing in mind UN Security Council Resolutions 1160, 1199 and 1203, as well as the Recommendation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe No. 1403 of 28 April 1999, we address the parliaments of all countries and inter-parliamentary European associations with the proposals: 1. to immediately use all means of political influence on NATO in order to put an end to the bombing of the territory of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, 2. to call in particular on members of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly to join forces in taking decisive action to end the NATO aggression by providing economic, technical and humanitarian assistance to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia," the statement said.

Points 3-5 stress the views that the process of resolving ethnic problems in Kosovo and Metohija should return to a political, peaceful direction, that efforts should be intensified to help all refugees and victims of the bombing, to contribute to their peaceful return home, and to ensure their national minority rights, while preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, as well as uniting the efforts of European parliaments in order to eliminate the consequences of the environmental catastrophe and destruction caused by the missile strikes on Yugoslavia.

The embassy also forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs a link to the pages of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, which contain the above-mentioned excerpts. The statement said that cooperation between Ukraine with NATO suffered at the time precisely because of this principled position of Ukraine.

"And perhaps, if Ukraine had not rushed to defend Yugoslavia then, it would have become a member of NATO a long time ago and would not have become the victim of Russia's aggression now," said the Ukrainian embassy.
