SNIPER WAS READY! Major Serbian police operation: Belgrader with weapons stashed for murders arrested!
After a spectacular operation carried out by the Serbian police in Belgrade, when an arsenal of military-grade weapons was seized, the investigation is expanding to the regional level.
Body armor and fake IDs that have been found indicate that a criminal group planned to carry out murders disguised as police officers.
Months of quiet work by members of the MUP (Serbian Interior Ministry) and the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office resulted in one of the largest illegal weapons hauls in the last few years.
Belgrade resident A.A. (41) has been arrested, and the police are now putting together the puzzle: who was supposed to be the target, when this deadly arsenal was to be used?
Enough weapons for "small war" in capital
In a garage and an apartment used by the suspect, the police encountered a movie-like scene. The following weapons have been seized:
Sniper rifle and submachine gun (weapons used in contract killings);
Two remote-controlled explosive devices;
Five automatic rifles and three automatic pistols (Heckler, Uzi, Scorpion);
Anti-personnel mine and hundreds of pieces of ammunition.
Attacks would have been carried out disguised as police?
What particularly alarmed investigators was the discovery of bulletproof vests with markings attached to them reading, "police" as well as gun holsters and forged MUP IDs. This modus operandi - where attackers disguised as police officers stop a victim or break into a building - has already been seen in some of the most brutal clashes between Balkan criminal clans.
Two key lines of investigation
According to information from sources close to the investigation, the focus is now on two points:
Ballistics experts are checking to see if the guns have already been used in some unsolved murders. It is suspected that the weapons arrived to Serbia through illegal channels from neighboring countries.
The MUP is working to discover to whom A.A. should have handed over the weapons. Footage from surveillance cameras taken near garages in New Belgrade, as well as the suspect's digital communications, are being reviewed.
"This operation broke up the logistical support for a serious criminal group. It's a matter of time before those who ordered these weapons will be identified," said a source from the investigation.
A.A. is in custody suspected of the serious crime of illegal production and trafficking of weapons and explosives.
