Drama because of war in Iran ends well for Serbian tourists: In impossible conditions, 1 MOVE WAS CRUCIAL
Serbian tourists in Malaysia went through an ordeal after learning, unprepared and shocked, about the war in Iran at the airport! A group of 24 of them, who departed for Southeast Asia on February 14, got stranded in Singapore for two days after the outbreak of the war and the closing of the airspace over the Middle East.
Fortunately, this drama had a positive outcome, thanks to the involvement of Qatar Airways and the Disko Travel agency.
In order to learn the details, we got in touch with the tour guide of this trip, Dragan Peric, a long-time tourismologist with rich experience in organizing and guiding trips.
"The trip included a visit to Kuala Lumpur, the islands of Langkawi and Penang, concluding in Singapore, from where the tourists were to return to Belgrade via the Middle East," Dragan told us.
However, they learned about the war at the airport. The Qatar Airways flight they were supposed to take got cancelled. Considering the circumstances, carriers do not have standard obligations toward their passengers.
More information soon arrived, that the Middle East airspace would remain closed until further notice.
The situation in Singapore became extremely tense, because a large number of European flights from Asia connect via hubs in the Middle East. Thousands of passengers became stranded, and the remaining tickets for routes bypassing the crisis area were sold out in record time.
According to passengers, prices reached 5,000 to 6,000 euros per ticket.
Dragan told us that Disko Travel agency managed to secure accommodation in Singapore for two days, which was almost impossible due to the huge demand. But, thanks to the resourcefulness of the Serbian company, that was resolved. However, as the situation did not stabilize, the group was forced to organize the return trip on their own.
At that point Disko Travel, together with Qatar Airways, managed to provide the group with tickets to Beijing, from where they are expected to return to Belgrade tomorrow.
The tourists are saying that they are exhausted and financially burdened, but that after the ordeal, the most important thing for them is to return home safely.
This case shows how geopolitical crises can momentarily disrupt international air traffic and leave travelers around the world without clear information and solutions, but the resourcefulness of our agency also showed how much their efforts can help.
