Nikolic: Serbia wants to join EU, but keep old friends

Serbia wants to be a member of the EU, but also maintain all of its old friendships, as this way it would secure better life for its citizens, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said on Thursday, during his visit to Cuba

Nikolic told Cuban media that Serbia attracts investors from around the globe, adding that duty-free markets are open for it almost everywhere. The country wants to free itself from the heavy burden of unemployment and become a modern European country, the president noted.

We will accomplish that. Some are asking us to make a choice in order to succeed, but we will actually succeed if we do not make that choice. Serbia can change leaderships, but not friendships and history, while it can change the future, Nikolic stressed.

As he put it, Serbia is facing crucial moments. The government has taken harsh austerity measures. I expect results from that, Nikolic said, adding that Serbia and Cuba could produce medicines together.

We could be Cuba's mainstay in Europe. Belgrade's airport could open for all flights to Havana and all flights to Cuba could go through Belgrade, he concluded.
