Belma Cokić, trustee for the integration of Serbs into Austrian community who works at the Austrian embassy in Belgrade says that to find a job in this country you first have to pass certain steps.

The news flash that Austria seeks 29.000 waiters, chefs, and assistants, and that the minimum wage is higher than the salary of IT engineer in Serbia (which is an average 1.500 Euro), intrigued  many Serbs who wish to earn extra income.

Still, to get a job you have to pass several steps.

- First, it is necessary to find an employer in Austria who wants to give you a job. You can find these job postings online because there are many websites with job offers in Austria, or through personal contacts. Still, it is important to emphasize that you should focus on those jobs which are deficit in that country, because it makes getting the job easier - explains Cokić.

The jobs you should focus on are hotel jobs - waiters, chefs, kitchen assistants, cleaners and package jobs are the most wanted jobs nowadays in Austria.

If you know that the minimum wage starting May this year is 1.500 Euro per month, it's evident why more and more Serbs are interested in finding a job in this country.

You do not need a visa, but to get a job, you have to have a work permit.

- This is the so-called "red-white-red card", or in German "Rot-Weiss-Rot-Karte". To get it you are supposed to submit an application at the embassy after you have found your employer. Several criteria exist whether or not you will get the permit, and of the most important is the need for that job position. For example, it does not matter that you know someone who owns a hair salon and who wants to hire you. If they do not need hair-dressers in Austria, you will not get a job - explains Cokić.

German language is not a must, but it is a big plus to get this permit.

The criteria to get the "red-white-red card" are qualifications, work experience, language, age, and studies in Austria (for high-qualified positions).

With this card you get work and residence permit and it lasts for 12 months.

After you get this paper and you have your employer, matters are simple - start packing.

There came out a warning from the Austrian embassy about people trying to scam Serbs hurling into Austria.

Thus, you may find certain advertisements promising work permit  if you pay an amount of money to a mid-man or company.

It is a strong recommendation not to pay that, but to contact the embassy right away.
