Some of them are under state protection, and many of them are on the UNESCO heritage list, like the monasteries after which Serbia is known in the world.

Many people do not know that, apart from Egypt and France, Serbia also has its valley of kings.

In the valley of the river Ibar, between the towns of Raska and Novi Pazar, where the Serbian state was first formed, the monasteries made by our kings are located.

Other names are The Valley of the Centuries and the Valley of Lilacs...

First monasteries, like Crna Reka and Nova Pavlica were built in the XIV century which testifies about the history of this area, and there is the oldest monument of Serbian church architecture from the IX century, the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul, built before the dynasty of Nemanjic.

This church, along with the monasteries Sopocani and Djurdjevi Stupovi is on the UNESCO list from 1979.

The list of immeasurable historical significance of the Valley of the Kings is populated by other monasteries, Gradac, Konculic, Studenica, who are under the UNESCO protection since 1986.

Monastery Zica is the key one because 7 Serbian kings were crowned there and this was the first place of the Serbian Archbishopric.

To make it even more beautiful, this valley has a love story hidden in it.

Once upon a time, Serbian King Uros I Nemanjic ordered that the lilacs should be placed along the valley as a token of his love to his wife Helen of Anjou.

Namely, his wife-to-be, Helen of Anjou got another name, Jelena Anzujska, when she got married to our king.

Before her coming to the court, the king ordered that the lilacs should be planted along the route in order to make the surrounding a little more hospitable, and so it happened.

Because of that, this part of the valley is called "The Valley of lilacs".

Right there, between the ground and the sky, a fortress was built, a Middle Ages town of Maglic, rising some 100 meters from the road connecting the gorge and the only road between the valley of Morava and Kosovo polje.

Close to there, on a cliff there is a monument to the fallen Serbian warriors.
