PRIEST MIJO DISCOVERED HOW HE EXPELLED THE DEVIL OUT OF A WOMAN: Confession of the last Yugoslav exorcists

We convey the entire story:

- In an era of successful heart transplants and other fantastic achievements of modern medicine, today, when astronauts do space flights and walk on the moon, some priests are still struggling against the "evil spirits" and other "demons" that reside in "the densest layers of the earth's atmosphere" as in the medieval era of wizards and witches cast out the devil and other demons from the possessed body.

- I am aware that the success I have achieved with this woman is not my personal merit. I realized how much our power is small, how little we are, how we are inadequate to the one force against which we must fight, against whom we are fighting. Looking at the woman, watching her suffering, I felt like Socrates when he said that in his defense: "The hardest part is that I have to fight against something that is not present ... As I was fighting with hay."

When a man is struggling with such a strong opponent, he must seek allies who are stronger than he, and this is no other then the dear God! I was just a tool in the hands of the good God. And like hoeing corn, the pick is not credited but the one it serves to, its also the case here. the true exorcist was dear God and I was just blunt instrument, a dull pick in His hands - said fra Mijo Djeno, professor of classical philology the Franciscan high school in Visoko, near Sarajevo, saying how he expelled evil spirits out of a woman.

For a moment we both fell silent, watching the curtain of thick white flakes that are falling silently in courtyard of the old Franciscan monastery. White winter eve of even more intensified atmosphere of the monastery of peace and quiet, so we were both startled when someone knocked on the door. Sister Silvia entered carrying a large tray with two cups of black coffee.

- Praised be Jesus and Mary - she said quietly, her rueful expression on his face as if apologizing as we break in the conversation. My eyes fell on a wall calendar, 6 March 1971!

Pay attention to that date in that year, as you might otherwise think that this what I talk to with Fr. Mijo Djeno happened a thousand years ago.

- At that time Jesus said to his disciples: Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Who believeth and is baptized shall be saved, and who does not believe will condemn himrself. And for those who believed in, will go to these signs: in my name shall cast out devils, speak with new tongues will, shall be taken serpents, and if you drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; the patients will they reach, and will heal". (Mark, 16, 15-18)

At the time seventy two returned with joy speaking about Jesus, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in thy name. I said to them, I watched Satan, where he fell like lightning from heaven ... " (Luke 10.17 to 20)

These were the first cases of exorcisms (expelling of devil and other evil spirits from the possessed, incantations and reading the prayer mentioned in the New Testament). Belief in the existence of evil spirits, which were originally angels (good spirits), but they were arrogant and rebelled wanting to be equal to God, but because of this God punishment and banished they from heaven and rejected, and this is preserved in Christian theology until today.

I visited several Franciscan monasteries and talking with their clergy I learned of several cases latest exorcisms of the possessed. A case at hand is certainly one of the last cases of exorcism with us. Performed recently at St. Ivan the Baptist in Podmilačje at Jajce, and exorcist was personally fra Mijo Djeno, professor of classical philology, a Franciscan who graduated from the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy in Zagreb.

- The subject is very delicate, and because I was is really a layman in such things, i would please you to point me to some literature in which exorcisms are processed, or the expulsion of the devil and other demons are performed - I said during the interview.

- To tell you the truth - said fra Djeno - about exorcisms I have very little literature, because I'm not a theorist, i approach it rather practically.

In preparation for our conversation, I searched the church literature about it, but the only thing I found is the old "Roman rites" which contains instructions for the expulsion of evil spirits.

- It gives you enough - fra Djeno interrupted me  and added - I used the same manual in my particular case.

Precisely in those rites i saw that a priest who finds the possessed person, can only perform the expulsion of evil spirits with the prior permission of the competent Bishop's office, as it is the case of so-called exorcism prayers retained.Was it that the case with you?

Yes. It was a female person. She came from afar, was from our country, but it was not from Bosnia and Herzegovina, nor from the Croatia. She turned to the Archbishop of Sarajevo, His Excellency Marko Alaupavic (now retired - op. M. P.), asking him to allow me to perform an exorcism on her. His Excellency Archbishop examined her case and gave his approval. For performing exorcism he authorized Don Mihajlo Markovic, the priest in Podmilacje, provided that he can delegate some other priest, and he chose me.

He thought that i was pretty right person for the job. In addition, before that I attended some cases expulsion of evil spirits. First case i know of was a obsessed woman in 1937 in the village of Jankovic, parishes of Ovcarevo near Travnik. Dr. Ivan Saric, at that time Archbishop of Sarajevo, did not allow the parish priest, Fr. Emmanuel Reico to expel evil spirits. She then turned to Banjaluka Bishop Josip Garic, who gave her consent, and the exorcism performed on her was done by Kruno Ladan, the guardian of the Franciscan monastery in Jajce.

Another case, which i remember, is the exorcism which was performed during the war over a woman by fra Ignjacije Idjotic, chaplain to the Franciscan monastery in Petricevac. I personally did only one exorcism.

I did not even check if someone is really obsessed or is it a disease because I relied on the Court of His Excellency Archbishop Alaupovic. I held to the "Roma locuta - causa finita". I thought he was quite intelligent and besides, I know that he is by nature skeptical and that such a case would not be approached lightly and would not have taken such a decision until he gained a firm conviction about what is it about. Therefore, I was just to approach the task at hand.

This is how I recognized the obsession of the mentioned woman: she would perform certain movements, certain gestures of her tongue, head, general gestures, gestures that people who govern themselves and their reason do not perform. In addition, she uttered some incomprehensible, incoherent and vague word, but all of this is done without her will and against her will. She, therefore, suffered terribly and she told me that they are to blame her parents, who - as I was told - did all sorts of stuff before her, considering that she was immature and uninterested girl.

I do not know how old she was, but she was already in adulthood. She could be a mother, but I did not ask if there were any children. She herself believed she was possessed by the devil. She had some internal psychological coercion against which she fought, but that against she fought and overwhelmed her, at least her beliefs, her power and her ability.

This is how I cast out devils. First, I confess, I said Mass and pious prayers proposed to divine assistance. Then I put on a corner and put a purple stole. Possessed and myself i protected with the cross and i sprinkled blessed water, and then I knelt praying, reading the psalms, the holy Gospels of Mark and Luke, St. Athanasius beliefs and enchantments of unclean spirit.

I can not say exactly, but it lasted for several hours, days, at least one week. It was so tedious that I someday came home after this exorcism so much exhausted and broken.

I gave her the cross to kiss and I used holy water, which was blessed for this purpose. However, I felt the most successful invocation of the Holy Cross and Christ Crucified, who just came to help the man to release these invisible forces that lead to the first human psychological distress, then to despair and, ultimately, to the final collapse. However, what i have all done during that time on my part, let it remain as it is- by not mentioning it. I think about the personal work that contribute to the exorcisms, when i was already in it, by performing these acts.

In addition to these exorcisms, if the direct success is not achieved with these exorcism, it is clear the man is somehow stimulated with his personal participation with the misery and the trouble of the person, so he tries to contribute on his side, if possible with some other acts during the exorcism like, withholding some maybe arbitrary fulfillment of my body, perhaps a little greater sacrifices from the whatnot.

For her part, she sometimes knelt and most time she  spent in a loose state, more lying.

Our conversation came to the stage where I had to be very careful in questioning, as the fra Djeno thoughtful but happily answered them. Finally, in a last attempt to be more specific, I reached for the "Roman Ritual".

There have been cases that the person came to the so-called. "Lucide intervalle" that it seems the person was fully natural and totally conscious, and that everything that is done is needless, what is done with it. Precisely because it about something imperceptibly, I fell into doubt as to whether or not there is one with which man fights. Just because that person which is said to be obsessed come to this "lucide intervalle", so it looks completely natural, normal, conscious, lucid, her gestures were completely normal, there is nothing that suggests the man and the belief that the person is obsessed of evil spirits, and then it comes back again.

If the exorcism was successful, it would show on the facial expression, cheering up, smile, calmness and expressing gratitude.
