Bear does not know, but parrots from the ZOO know exactly when winter will end!
- Birds are the best example whether spring is coming. Wild animals who are used to tropical areas also know when the warmer weather is coming and they always get out - said Jožef Ezveđ, a veterinary specialist in Belgrade ZOO for Telegraf news agency
People believe that the behavior of bears on Candlemas can show whether winter will last or not.

However, according to Jožef Ezveđ, a veterinary specialist, we cannot conclude that for sure by observing the bears in the Belgrade ZOO.
- People believe this, but this is not the case if a bear lives in a closed surrounding. Our bear is not living in nature because we feed her and give her everything she needs - says Ezveđ.
He also stated that the bear finished her hibernation period long ago and that it was irregular.
- Greenhouse effect had its effect on temperature fields. In the last couple of days she would look outside, sniff, but she did not go out regularly. Before that she was constantly outside, she was even sleeping outside. If I am to comment on her behavior whether this winter will last, I would say that it is something in between. It looks to me like she has doubts whether to fully awake herself or to go back to the cave to sleep a bit more.
Ezveđ claims that the bear's behavior is just one of the markers whether the winter will last.
- Birds are the best example for this. In the last couple of days some of the parrots started making their nests, and those are the birds who like warm weather and they know when spring will start. Sun rays affect their hormones, love is in the air, you can see that they are livelier, that they are getting ready for the season. Other animals react too, they are getting out, they rejoice.. Wild animals from the tropical areas also know when the time is right and they go out - concludes Ezveđ.
