On today's day in 1915 a Serbian teacher Veljko Čubrilović (July 1, 1886 - February 3, 1915), one of the conspirators to kill the Austro-Hungarian archduke Franz Ferdinand in the city of Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.

Even though many people think that the Austro-Hungarian law was against the capital punishment, this went only for the people who were not of age.

Veljko was the eldest among the conspirators and he was hanged.

Night before his death he wrote a letter to his family.

The original copy was burned, but the prison keeper took pity and wrote it down before destroying it.

Hurtful words of a man facing death testify that sacrifice was not in vain, an that everybody, including his daughter Nada who was 8 at the moment, will taste the warmth of freedom.

"When you read this letter, my spirit will fly over you and our child, lovely Nada.

Your Veljko will leave this "valley of tears" and he leaves you and our child without anything but his endless love. Honey, my last thoughts will go to you two, my dearest. Do not be sad to much, this was the way it had to be.

There are photos of you and Nada here in front of me, and some inner voice whispers to me, that after this tragedy, the sun and God's blessing will shine upon you.

Be happy, and time will heal this heavy wound. My dearest, I know life and I prophesy that you will walk firmly through it and make through thorny paths.

But if you lose strength to fight these paths, look for a mate to help and understand you, like I understood you my whole life. You are free, and you deserve to be happy.

When our daughter grows up, tell her about her father. I think she will understand and forgive her father for leaving her without him.

Yes, I am asking for her forgiveness, because I failed her as a parent.

You will tell this to our child: your father carried you and loved you more than life itself. He thought of you day and night.

I love you both, and may God bless you. Send your prayers to him, to be merciful."
