The Slovenian government has made the decision that all foreign doctors and other medical personnel from EU Member States and third countries will no longer be able to legally employ, unless they prove to actively govern the Slovenian language.

Doctors, nurses, midwives and graduate pharmacists according to the draft law, which still needs a confirmation from the Parliament, will have to submit evidence that they have a high level of C1 knowledge of the Slovenian language, which enables them to communicate with colleagues and patients, as well as writing reports , instructions and recipes, the decision of the prime Minister Miro Cerar.

For other foreigners who are already working or applying to work in the Slovenian health care the rule will apply that they must have a minimum level of knowledge of the official language B2, which will be judged by their employer.

According to projections, by 2025 , due to the aging population and doctors going into retirement Slovenia will have to recruit 1,800 doctors, and most family medicine doctors and anesthesiologists are sought for, especially in the northeastern part of the country.

Slovenia has been focused on the "import" of doctors for years, and other medical personnel from other parts of the former Yugoslavia, which was largely stopped after the independence of the country.
