Slobodan Praljak, who drank poison in Hague Tribunal during the announcement of the verdict which sentenced him to 20 years in prison for the crimes against Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was a retired General Lieutenant of the Croatian Army. He was born on January 2, 1945, in Capljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and has a nickname of Beard, he passed away today at a hospital in The Hague, on November 29, 2017, after drinking poison.

His father, Mirko, was a member of the security police structures of the former SFRY after the Second World War.

Praljak attended high school in Siroki Brijeg. He was in the same class for six years with the later Croatian Defense Minister Gojko Susak. They were sitting together at the same desk for two years. He went to studies in Zagreb.

He graduated in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He wrote his thesis on correcting the chromatic picture of the electric signal for television work. In 1971 he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, Philosophy, and Sociology. In 1972 he graduated from the Academy of Theater, Film, and Television.

He first worked as a theater director, and later he recorded a television series "Blesan and Tulipan", a documentary "Death of a Dog" and a film "The Return of Katarina Kozul". At the beginning of the 1990s, he became the secretary of the Croatian Democratic Party (HDS), which he left in the spring of 1991.

Praljak went as a volunteer to Sunja on September 3rd, 1991 and be later became the commander of the place not far from Sisak. From July 24 to November 8, 1993, he was the commander of the Main Staff of the Croatian Defense Council (HVO). The news comes from that period that he stood on a tank in Prozor and that he told the soldiers to follow him towards Uskoplje when defenses started breaking, Vecernji list wrote at that time.

He is attributed with the responsibility for demolition of Old bridge in Mostar, even though he was stripped off of his duty as a commander of HVO. Praljak claimed that the bridge was demolished by activating explosives which was places on the left bank of Neretva river and that Bosnia and Herzegovina army was there.

During the trial, Praljak, with the help of his associates, published 18 books with the documents of so-called, Homeland war and analysis about the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

The Hague Tribunal, however, asked him to settle the defense costs of 3.3 million euros because they estimated that he had assets and stocks worth 6.5 million euros.

Praljak refused that saying that he has no property under his name. The business in companies that are connected to him is led by his son. They possess two business buildings in Zagreb, hotel, underground garage, restaurant, a cargo handling company in the river ports (operating in Sisak), and Praljak himself used to be co-owner of the tobacco factory in Ljubuska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

Slobodan Praljak received Croatian pension, and his lawyer Neda Pinter said that he could claim the pension based on his participation in the Army of BiH.

- In 1992 he was a member of the Army of BiH and possessed the ID card of the armed forces with the signature of Ariop Pasalic - said Pinter, noting that Praljak never asked for the pension from BiH, Vecernji List wrote last year.
