At least 50 people lost their lives, and more than 100 were injured in the fire that caught the resort Mati, east of Athens, announced by the officials today.

There are children and women among the dead. Sky TV from Greece reported this morning that 20 bodies were found on the golden coast near Athens. The information was confirmed from the Red Cross, they officially announced that the number of deaths increased to 50.

Bodies of three women and one child were found this morning around 4, while a boy and a woman were saved.

According to the information from the Ministry of Health, 104 people were admitted to hospitals with burns, 11 of them are in a very serious condition. 16 children are among them.

A spokesman of the Greek government stated earlier that at least 24 people have died and that at least 88 adults and 16 children were injured, reports Reuters. A number of Danish tourists are among the missing.

Mati is in the region Rafina and it is very popular among the local tourists, first of all among retired people and among children who come here to camp.

Due to the fire, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has stopped his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Greece sought assistance from the EU, while Spain and Cyprus offered assistance themselves.

About 100 houses and 200 cars were burnt in the fire.

The fires are also raging west of Athens, which is why many residents have left their homes there.

This fire threatens to jeopardize traffic because it is located near the highway, which is why the Athens-Corinth road is closed, one of two paths to Peloponnese, and rail traffic is also interrupted.

People of Greece are in fear that the number of victims will increase.
