Little girl Sofia S. (15) from Arandjelovac died when she took ecstasy at a house party, but her heart continued to live - in another person's chest. Tamara Dobricic, a mother of three, waited to have a transplant surgery since 2002.
When Sofia's parents agreed on the transplant surgery, the heart of the late girl started beating in Tamara's chest. When she found out who saved her life, Tamara wrote a moving status on her Facebook profile.
This is what she wrote:
"There are no words in the moments like this... That evening I found out from a talk show whose heart is prolonging my life. Sadness is immeasurable in one home, almost in the neighborhood, and on the other hand, happiness is immeasurable in another. Arandjelovac, miracles like this happen here... How to show gratitude to the family of the donor? How to behave to remain a human? This wonderful heart is growing stronger in me. Know that I will take good care of it, little angel... I will always care about it...
My health problems started back in 2002. Three years later, I was diagnosed with myocarditis, a serious sickness of the heart, and I was fine four years ago, and then the problems started again. In 2015 I received two pacemakers, but the conditions kept getting worse, and I was placed on the list, waiting for the transplant, at the beginning of this year. My health dropped significantly last month. The end. I knew that the end is coming.
I ended up in Hospital, in the ER, and then on the Transplant department. And then the doctors came to my room on November 6, saying that there is a possibility that I will get another heart during the evening. I didn't believe it because there were calls before, waitings, announcements, but nothing in the end... In the evening, around 19:00, it all began. The doctor came in and took off my pacemaker. I knew that it was the start of the transplant. They sedated me and they operated on me that night. I woke up with a new heart. I found out whose heart that was after 11 days.
It wasn't easy to find out. We are from Arandjelovac, we know everything. I know that family. We bought furniture in their shop. And I have seen her several times. She was always a happy child. She wasn't a drug addict, she didn't do drugs. A curiosity of a child took her to death that night, unfortunately. That is the only thing I am worried about for my three children.
I am still in the hospital and I will be here for the next two weeks. After that, I will be home, but without contact with other people due to possible viruses. I have a desire to go to them, but, at the same time, I am afraid that I shouldn't. My feelings are so mixed up that I will leave the decision about meeting to her family. Let them decide. It is hard for me, but I can't even imagine how hard it is for them. I am grateful to them for deciding to be a donor. You know, people are dying each day in hospitals waiting for organs. And it is very hard. It is hard for everybody, us the patients, doctors, nurses.
I can only say to parents to raise their kids the way our parents raised us. Keep them under control because terrible things are happening in the streets."
