President of the Assembly of Serbia Ana Brnabic said today that Serbia and its people have no time to waste and that the upcoming local elections will be held in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Serbia.

After visiting the "Mali Princ" and "Palcica" kindergartens in Valjevo, western Serbia, Brnabic told reporters that she ccould not imagine that anyone would prevent the holding of (repeat) local elections in Belgrade, which have been scheduled by the Serbian National Assembly - a repeat vote that was demanded by the opposition.

She also assessed that now, the the threats of a boycott are a "mockery" aimed at the citizens of Serbia.

Asked about some opinions that local elections can be put on hold, if irregularities are noticed, Brnabic responded with a counter question: what are the mechanisms for anyone to prevent elections called by the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

"I don't understand that. How can someone prevent something that is a feast of democracy? The situation is that we have elections (coming up), when we talk about elections for (the City Assembly of) Belgrade, because they (opposition) asked for (repeat) elections, not us," said Brnabic, a member of the ruling SNS party.

According to her, Serbia and its people have no time to waste and the other upcoming local elections will be held in accordance with the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Serbia. She recalled that the citizens of Serbia voted in parliamentary elections in April 2022, that the government was set up after a parliamentary majority was formed, and that Belgraders also voted then.

"And that's when the majority in the City Assembly was formed, the mayor was elected, all city bodies started working. The next elections were supposed to be in 2026. But no, they came in 2023 and they (opposition) said, we are asking for early elections. And now they say, but now we we're going to prevent the vote. Which elections are you going to prevent? The ones you demanded for, urgently?," wondered Brnabic.

She noted that the opposition is threatening to boycott and physically prevent the election process.

"So - through violence, those who say they are against violence, they will use violence to prevent the vote they asked for. Wait a minute, do you want elections or not? Well, you can't change your opinion every six months, do you want elections or not," Brnabic asked.
