The minister in charge of international economic cooperation, Nenad Popovic, met on Monday in Belgeade with a delegation of Russian scientists, who are visiting with the aim of presenting to Serbian officials a new cancer vaccine that is based on mRNA technology.

The visiting delegation includes representatives of the N.F. Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the Russian Fund for Direct Investments led by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Leonidovich Gintsburg, the Serbian minister's office announced.

"The management of the Center presented us with a revolutionary achievement, a vaccine against oncological diseases based on the mRNA technology. This innovative therapy is created personalized for each patient and according to the results of pre-clinical tests, it shows extremely high efficiency in the treatment of cancer. Unlike classic vaccines that are used for preventive purposes, this therapy activates the patient's immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells," said Popovic.

This is a state project of national importance that is being implemented under the direct patronage of President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

Within this project, a consortium consisting of 17 leading Russian scientific research institutes and universities was formed to work on developing new therapies in the field of oncology, immunology and genetics.

It is planned for the Russian delegation to meet with Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar, as well as with the management of the Torlak  Institute for Virology, Vaccines and Serums and the Serbian State Health Insurance Fund (RFZO).

On that occasion, professional aspects, funding opportunities and cooperation models will be discussed.

Minister Popovic stressed Serbia's desire to make this innovative therapy available to cancer patients in our country.

If agreement is reached, Serbia could become the first country, after Russia, where this cancer vaccine will be available to patients.
