Poverty, illness, and death of the mother, the struggle for survival - it is a difficult burden that small Aleksa Bogdanovic wears on his backs. A five-year-old boy from Bijeljina collects old paper to survive with his grandmother and a 15-year-old deaf-mute cousin.

Doctors were convincing Lidija to leave her sick son, and now he is working and driving his "cruiser". Nothing can stop him (PHOTO)

Aleksa was only two years old when sickness and death ripped out of his embrace the one thing he loved the most - his mother, reports BN.

- She died. She was sick. Near the hospital, where I collect cardboard, there is my mom in a wheelchair - said the five-year-old Aleksa showing the picture of his mother in a wheelchair.

When the boy lost his mother, his father was in prison, and then he abandoned him.

- I will go to mom now, to the cemetery in Sijekovac. I kiss her and I put some flowers, a rose - said the boy who has heavy burdens instead of the carefree childhood.

He was left to his grandmother. They earn their piece of bread by gathering old paper and cardboard. They get only 15 KM (around 7.5 euros) for 100 kg.

- Aleksa has been with me ever since his mother died because he wasn't with his father. He is gathering this cardboard with me, he gets up early to go to the market. He fights to work. How we can last, I don't know - Aleksa's grandma Raza Aziri Bogdanovic with tears in her eyes.

They live in rented barracks, 100 marks of rent expenses and the constant threat that they will be evicted.

- I am not asking for some money, just for the children so they can eat, to keep warm, and the worst is where will they settle. Flats are 150, 200 marks a month, where will I get money for that. That is the most difficult for me.

They are getting the social help of 240 marks (120 euros) for the boy and his deaf-mute 15-year-old girl cousin. Good people help us but it's hard.

- If there weren't for the neighbors who help us, we would starve to death. I am so sad because if he leaves everything will be erased and I won't know where he is. You know how the child becomes attached, when he comes to you, kisses you, hugs you, says here's my granny. He is eager for parent's love, he is running towards anyone. What can I say, his childhood is very sad, the way he lives now - grandma Raza said through tears that it would break her heart with sorrow if they took her grandson to the home for children without parents.
