Aleksandar Vucic speaks about sanctions against Russia: This is his position
President Aleksandar Vucic said on Thursday that he hopes the conflict in Ukraine will end soon, and that he does not expect to change his position regarding Serbia's refusal to impose sanctions against Russia.
Vucic also recalled that Serbia's Council for National Security made the decision not to impose sanctions at the beginning of that conflict and that Serbia has been adhering to that decision for four years.
"I hope the conflict will end soon. I can't guarantee anything, but I'm too old to change my mind," Vucic told at a news conference held with the head of the EU delegation to Serbia, Andreas von Beckerath, who handed him the European Commission's annual report on Serbia's progress.
This was Vucic's reply to a journalist who asked whether Serbia will change its position and impose sanctions against Russia - because the report states that Serbia has increased the level of alignment with EU's foreign policy, and that the bloc wants that process to continue.
Aleksandar Vucic also noted that Serbia has been respecting the conclusions of its Councill for National Security adopted shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine for almost four years.
"Both in the Council and in the Government of Serbia, people can change that decision. I think it is important that we do everything we can for Serbia to progress on the European path," said Vucic.
