“The rights of a people, whose existence in Montenegro is primeval and fundamental, must be dealt with by the Constitution,” said Nikolic.

According to Nikolic, Montenegro needs to resolve "certain issues if it wants to become a European Union member-state.”

The Serbian president pointed out, however, that Serbia and Montenegro were on the friendliest possible terms and that “Serbia will not be forcing Montenegro to do anything.”

Nikolic met with representatives of the Serb community in Montenegro, who informed him about problems facing them, on Monday.

The representatives told Nikolic that the Serbs were a majority nation in Montenegro and did not want the status of a national minority but rather that of a constitutive nation, which they had enjoyed before Montenegro had broken away from its union with Serbia in 2006.
