TRUMP, SERBIAN! How did Trump speak about Serbia and should we be happy for his victory

It is difficult to predict what will his policy be towards Serbia because of his inconsistencies in his attitude

Analysts largely agree that the US policy towards Serbia and the Balkans will not be changed significantly after the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential election. While Hillary Clinton was thought that she knows the region, specific attitudes and future actions of Donald Trump to our country, well acquainted with the new president of America can hardly predict.

With the exception of the fact of Trump's famous statement that Serbs should not have been bombed, which turned out to be half-true, because he thought armed forces would be better solution, which would not cause so much death and chaos, there are no specific statements concerning us.

What could be significant for Serbia is Trump's official opposition of the most American military actions, as well the open (mutual) support for Putin, which ultimately speaks in benefit for his claims of peaceful world relationships, and those who believe in Russian-Serbian friendship think we can also only benefit from their their mutual benevolence.

While some pointed that Hillary Clinton, in case you were elected, would continued to advocate for the integration, development of democracy and the rule of law in the region she knows, VOA interlocutors agree in opinion that it is difficult to predict what will be the policy of Donald Trump because of what they see as inconsistencies in his views.

In the past nearly eight years, the US administration, according to many, was not sufficiently engaged in the Balkans. This, the former US ambassador to NATO, Kurt Volker, who is an advocate of a stronger international engagement of USA, is just a reflection of a broader foreign policy strategy of President Barack Obama - withdrawal from the international scene.

Vucic congratulated Trump victory: See what he said

I know he would not present it in that way, but if you look at Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria or Libya, you will see the decrease in USA responsibility and focusing on, as he announced, building a nation on the inner plan. When USA retreats like that, a certain vacuum remains which was filled up with the worst - said Volker.

Analyst Daniel Server estimates for the Voice of America that the Balkans is certainly not a priority in Washington, who expects from the region to solve most of its own problems.

- We expect that independent, sovereign Balkan countries  solve 99 percent of their problems themselves. Maybe there's one percent that Washington and Brussels can pay attention - said Server.

He adds that Trump has a very meager experience when it comes to the Balkans.

- It seems like he doesn't know anything about the Balkans, and at one time he advocated the use of ground forces against Serbia during the Kosovo war. I know that people in Belgrade see Trump as an ally, but they should be reminded of what he said during the Kosovo war - says Server.

He also recalls the fake interview of the funny accent where Trump allegedly apologizes for NATO bombing.

- I really think it's a fake interview, or  Trump is so inconsistent that it is very difficult to say what would have been his the policy towards the Balkans - said Server.

PUTIN CONGRATULATED TRUMP ON HIS VICTORY: This is what the great Russian said to United States president

- Trump in 1999, in an interview with US media, mentioned ground troops while apparently criticized NATO air intervention, because of which the Balkans had divided opinions about Hillary Clinton and her husband, the former US President Bill Clinton. The wars are over - says Server.

He does not expect that  Trump to oppose Russian influence, but notes that it is difficult to know what the new president will do, given that he has amounted different views on many issues.

Volker does not think Trump wants to create a conflict situation with Russia, Iran, Turkey, with the great powers, but adds that, if it is felt that someone endangers or wrongly treated the US and their interests, they would get a very strong answer. Foreign policy orientation of the new US administration will depend on who will occupy the top positions in the cabinet, said ambassador Volker .

Former US Ambassador to Montenegro Sue K. Brown on the other hand hopes that the strategic objective for the region of the Balkans will remain the same - the Euro-Atlantic integration.

- It is important for the Administration, no matter who leads it, to be actively engaged on Balkans, because we are talking about an area that is still facing numerous problems. If we do not pay attention to these issues, we are not involved and we do not help the development of democracy, we will have problems we probably will not want to face later - she said.
