The director of the Kosovo Humanitarian Law Center, Bekim Blakaj, said that the possible adoption of the law on the protection of the values of the so-called KLA cannot deny the crimes committed against Serbs and other non-Albanians, stating also that it cannot influence the work of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.

"I don't believe that this law could reject the responsibility for the committed crimes and that should not be the case, there is no law that can deny any crime when there is evidence," Blakaj pointed out in a statement for Kosovo Online.

He stated that the draft law which he had seen doesn't provide many details about the measures that will be taken to protect the struggle of the so-called KLA, but added that one article of that law says that the government in Pristina should take action when it finds out that a former members of the so-called KLA got arrested in a third country on a warrant issued by Serbia.

Blakaj adds that he is not sure what that means and in what way it will be concluded that the arrest warrant is politically motivated, as well as that the measures that the government in Pristina is supposed to take in that case are not known.

He believes that this law can in no way be linked to the work of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague, and adds that it can be seen as a countermeasure that can prevent or affect the work of these chambers.

The draft law caused concern in the United States, and in a post on Twitter, US ambassador in Pristina Philip Kosnett assessed that "the proposed law is the wrong way to show respect for the KLA."

He said that the bill "criminalizes freedom of speech, intimidates citizens and can cost dearly."

The draft law on protecting the values of the so-called KLA ("Kosovo Liberation Army") will be before members of the Kosovo Assembly on Friday, August 7.
