After two first-instance trial verdicts of the Appellate Court, in June, Rasic's sentence of 18 years in prison was acquitted for lack of evidence that he committed the crime. He was released in March to defend himself while at liberty, after six years and seven months behind bars.

The first accused in this case, Velibor Bakic was sentenced to a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for the murder of Taric. Bakic submitted an extraordinary remedy to the High Court in Belgrade - a request for a repetited procedure for the hearing of witnesses who were not heard during the trial, and who could talk about his alibi.

This case once caused great public attention due to the fact that the beheaded Taric was found in a black plastic bag on August 22, 2008 at the Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra Street in Belgrade, after an anonymous tip was sent to Belgrade media. The following day, the police found Taric's burned body in the bushes of the lower part of the Karadjordjoev park in Belgrade.

The judgment of the Appellate Court sentenced Bakic to the maximum penalty for murder, while the first-instance verdict sentenced him to 20 years in prison for aggravated murder.

In the first instance verdict, Bakic was convicted of aggravated murder - 35 years in prison, and Rasic to 30, but the verdict was overturned due to a number of inconsistencies and the trial was repeated.

Bakic and Rasic were arrested in late August 2008, and were released from prison in March this year.
