Hugo Turcotte is a Canadian who trains with our boys in Hokey club Belgrade.  This charming young man, in his interview with Telegraf.rs, reveals how and why he chose Serbia to continue his hokey career after Canada.

You are from Canada, how and why did you decide to come to Serbia?

- Few of my close friends from Canada have been training hokey in Serbia for five years, more precisely in Belgrade and in Novi Sad. They told me every summer a lot about your cities, tradition and that is what has drawn me to come and learn a bit more about Serbia.

Was it hard to make a decision to leave Canada? After all, it is known for honey and top class players.

- Well, not really. I played hokey in North America, United States of America, Canada, but i wanted a new, fresh start and that is why i decided to come to Europe. I wanted new experiences, to meet the other side of hokey world and i succeeded in that.

When you compare hokey in Canada and Serbia, what is different the most?

- First of all, the surface of the ice is much greater here than in Canada. We play on a smaller grounds in Canada, and this demands more physical strength, more hits and fight but here in Serbia, or anywhere in Europe, the players are fast, i would say even the tempo of the game, which makes the biggest difference between Canada and Europe. So, i would say that hokey at home is physical strength, and here skills and individual capacity.  

You were with the team on preparation in Budapest, how are you getting along in general with them?

- Yes, we were on preparations in Budapest. When i arrived they were all curious: why did you come here from Canada, but they all accepted me and helped me around everything. This is a big city and i knew nothing, where to go first, but they were all very helpful. Also i was very surprised that hokey players know English language so well. Last year i played in Germany and i had problems with communicating with my colleagues because they don't speak English very well. This year it's very easy because everybody speaks my language perfectly. Guys from the team are really good to me, from the first day till now and we are having fun.

Do you know Serbian language?

- I am working on in. I know several words but i need a teacher. I have to take some classes, to find someone to help me. Although, my colleagues from the team are often playing some Serbian songs and i learned some.

What is your favorite singer then and do you like our music scene?

- Yes, i have a favorite singer, Ana Nikolic. I am a great fan of hers.

Why? Because of her looks or her songs?

- I like her songs, i like the rhythm but it is obvious that the girl looks very good.

What made the strongest impression on you in Belgrade?

- Belgrade is known for great night life, but also for beautiful girls and good people. Everybody knows that i am not Serb and they have to talk to me in English, they are amazed: "You are from Canada, what are you doing in Serbia? What is wrong with you?". All in all they are so nice, i am welcomed everywhere, and that is what surprised me the most in Serbia and Belgrade.

Do you have a girlfriend here?

- No i don't, but i met some beautiful girls. Let us stay with that.

For finish, describe Serbia and Belgrade in 5 words?

- Rakija, night life, women, hokey, now i can say hokey. Only one more word is missing. Rivalry, i am sorry, more than one word, rivalry between Partizan and Red Star.
