European commission tried to get the two sides to work on compromise, but without success

Slovenian Minister of agriculture Dejan Zidan sharply criticized the proposition of European Commission to enable Croatian manufacturers in Istria to sell wine under the name "Teran".

It seems that Balkan is quiet, but tectonic changes are happening underneath it: This analyst claims that the states have failed, and these are the causes

- It was my duty to inform other minister that with attacking Slovenian "Teran", they attack all 1.750 wines protected with the mark of originalitysaid Ziran to Slovenian journalists after the meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of EU member countries on Monday, reports Hina.

Croatian agency claims that Ministers talked about exceptions from the rules about protected marks on origin for wines.

The European Commission recently confirmed that it has prepared a delegated act which would allow Croatian winemakers in Istria to continue selling wine called "Teran", causing dissatisfaction with Slovenia, which protected that name with the mark of originality.

Hina said that Slovenia could collect the qualified majority in the Council to stop the adoption of the delegated act, which means that it would take 55 percent of the Member States in which there is at least 65 percent of the total population of the Union, for which, in the opinion Croatian Agency, there is no chance.

It is said that Zidan confirmed he doesn't expect from Slovenia to gather the required majority.

Agency said that Slovenia, before Croatian joining the EU, protected "Teran" with the mark of originality as a Slovenian product, which means no one besides Slovenian manufacturers can sell wine under that name.

Croatia complained considering that Slovenia had no rights to protect "Teran", because the Slovenian part of Istria makes the wine under the name "teran" from the grape variety refosk, and the Croatian part of Istria makes the wine from the grapes teran.

European commission tried to get the two sides to work on compromise, but without success. That is why they decided on adoption of a delegated act, which would allow Croatian manufacturers use the same name.
