The European Union expressed hope that Serbia and Macedonia would resolve issues in a peaceful manner since Belgrade withdrew diplomatic staff from Skopje.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission told BIRN that the diplomatic incident in Skopje was "a bilateral issue between the two countries that the EU closely monitors.".

- We expect both sides to show their restraint and to resolve the issue in a peaceful manner, in the spirit of good neighborly relations - says the Commission.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will talk today over the phone with Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev on the latest situation.
